At the End of the Road

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I liked how the tree overarched the farm buildings in this Korean village, set in a narrow valley. Beyond this farmstead there were just recently cropped ricefields - and then the ubiquitous small dam and lake. In the Seventies, every possible valley had a dam built above it to catch the summer rains, the water then being channeled to irrigate the crops. I imagine that this property was once quite prosperous. Now the grandchildren only visit on holidays with their high tech or crypto prosperity. So they have taken a different road - I hope it lasts as long as the old one did.

Specific Feedback

I love how B and W can sometimes get closer to the essence of the scene, where color is not there to distract from form, texture and contrast. I do wish, however, that this tree had had a background of sky. And there was more shadow on the right half of the tree, which I tried to lighten.

Technical Details

OM1 + 100-400mm (@140mm) 1/400 f9 ISO 800 -0.7EV

Tonalities adjusted in LR, then Topaz Sharpen. In PS, B and W adjustment (color sliders). Then in Nik SilverEfex adjusted further, especially contrast, and shade on the tree.

Hi Mike, what an interesting image. You’re right about black and white—it was the ideal choice. I especially appreciated your commentary and the historical context. Well done!
