Backlit Oreamnos

I took this photo at the midpoint of a very long hike. The sun was relatively high overhead, but also backlighting the animal, which is maybe not ideal, but I’d like to hear what folks think.

Specific Feedback Requested

I really enjoy B&W images, but I’m a self-taught neophyte processor, and I wring my hands over what might work. I’d greatly appreciate any and all critiques.

Technical Details

Is this a composite: No
The photo was taken with a Nikon D7500 and a Sigma 100-400 mm f/5.0-6.3 lens. Settings were aperture priority: ISO 220; 400 mm; f/6.3; 1/500 sec; EV+1.0. I cropped in on the animal and did a somewhat unaccountable amount of editing in Lightroom. In addition to dodging and burning, I tried to diminish the influence of a few distracting (to me at least) light areas caused by snowfields in the background. I also attempted to tone down some highlights in the guard hairs of the animal, while also attempting to take some of the animal out of the shadows.

The silvery light on the animal is wonderful and the BG is perfect! Whatever you did looks to me to be just right.

Everything looks good to me. Very well done.

Dianne, Harley, thank you for the evaluation. I’ll not mess with it further.

Cheers,
Craig

A beautiful image, which is technically solid!
Squarish comp works well here. Just wish that eye was more visible.

Thank you Jagdeep. I considered bringing out some shadows at the eye, and I think that it’s doable. I’ll give it a shot.

Cheers,
Craig

I think it’s very beautiful and I like how the light outlines him.

I really love this. It’s very artistic, has a fine art look at least to me look. I really like the backlighting. It adds an interesting outline that wouldn’t be there otherwise. Beautiful!
