Badland Sunrise

Sunrise in Death Va;;ey was coming through high clouds and was really, really warm, quite the visual delight. In this image, the miracle of Photoshop removed all the people from Z-Point overlook. One person was wearing a neon orange jacket that had to be visible from the space shuttle.

Excellent! Love everything about this image. Not even a small nit.

Nice viewpoint and a superb sky above the desert floor. The lead line path through the hills is an excellent visual transport system.

Harley, this is excellent! Everything going on in the frame is beautiful, and the composition ties it all together nicely. No nits from me.

Harley: Count me in on really liking this. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could PS away annoying folks in real life? Well maybe not, since I can be annoying at some times but at least never wearing a neon orange jacket. Marvelous capture of a magical moment. >=))>

The colours are amazing, and the curves of the mountains along with center ‘‘S’’ line makes a great leading path. Even the clouds are just perfect.
Thanks for sharing such a great image,
Cheers

Harley, the different colors are pretty amazing, making this seem like a landscape from a different planet. It’s neat how under a sunrise/sunset, the colors can be so different due to what’s being reflected. I’m always astonished at how major “outdoor” retailers often push the brightest colors. To me, that’s the opposite of leave no trace (or be no trace). :slightly_smiling_face:

Very nice Harley! I love the unique perspective you found here which can be hard to do. This of course can be personal, but I feel the badlands are too yellow for my taste, I did a quick Selective Color adjustment by bringing down the yellow of the yellows  I also tweaked the reds a little bit to add a touch of cyan. I also did a subtle adjustment with Color Balance to take a tad out of the reds and pushed it a little towards blue. This makes it feel more believable to me and the yellows aren’t so in your face.

Harley,

Oh my - Yowza! (new word.) I must say you’re putting it mildly by calling this a “visual delight.” But of course it is and even more. Kudos for finding another vantage point! the lead in of the wash, sandy stream bed works beautifully in the composition and I really like that the midground formations (ie. the beacon…) are just a nice compliment to the bigger landscape and not the main feature (the Manly Beacon that is.)

I didn’t even mention the sky yet.

What a sight. Congrats on a beautiful capture - and including processing and presentation.

Wow, what a crazy sunrise. I really like your composition from this unconventional viewpoint, the badlands and wash just funnel your eye to the amazing light and clouds in the background. You make powerful use of symmetry with this comp, it is so nicely balanced,

I like the colors you have in the clouds and the distant mountains. This is subjective, but I would suggest reducing the yellow saturation in the badlands a little. I think it would achieve a better balancing of saturation with the level of saturation in the sky and mountains. Here is a rework reflecting my suggested edit.

Well framed, Harley. That wash provides a great lead-in. I do think the yellows in the badlands are a bit over-powering in the original and prefer David’s rework.

I’ll go with the original on this one because you’re recent work suggests you’re less after the natural look than you had been in the past. Besides you’re more interest in an interesting color composition than adhering to reality. At least that’s how I see things.

Too bad you didn’t have more color to work with… :upside_down_face:

Kidding aside, I love it just as presented. It looks like an outrageous sunrise; I say let the color rock.
