Self Critique

This is a mating couple of Bald Eagles that I photograph frequently. Does the second eagle add depth or distraction ?

Creative direction

Love the early morning light, wing reflection on itself and the body positioning.

I think two eagles in a frame is something rarely seen in a flight image. At least for me.

Specific Feedback

Does the second eagle in the frame work ?

Description

This mating couple are always together. In the tree or in the air. I would like to say I planned the frame but a pure coincidence is the truth. The light was perfect that morning as they looked for fish in the pond below.

Very lucky to get numerous poses and looks that morning.

Hi Andrew. A very nice shot. I’d say more distraction than depth in this case. It’s so hard to get a feeling of depth with nothing but blue sky! If there was some evidence of interaction between the birds, I think this would be far more effective. As it is, they don’t even seem aware of one another. Since these are regularly available subjects, I wonder if you could do two quick shots in succession with focus on one, then the other and merge them? I have no idea if it would work or look weird, but it might be fun to try it.

A really nice look at the in-focus eagle, Andrew. I agree it’s hard to get two eagles in the same frame and I think the OOF eagle helps in the sense of adding an element to an otherwise monotonous blue sky, but it’d be nice if it were sharper.
