I often see this kind of “staining” on the bark of Gray Birch. Not sure what causes it but I find the patterns a subtle and beautiful contrast to the bark itself.

Funny how things catch our attention sometimes. I might have walked right by this because it doesn’t have many curly bark bits, something I have photographed many time with birches. But the rainbow is so pretty and vibrant in a restrained, tree-like way. Gentle pinks and rust and green - all speaks of spring to me. I like the varying textures invading from the north. Nicely seen.
