Description

I drove by this tree at the base of Mt. Laguna many times while shooting the mountain itself and the anza borrego desert. It never had the conditions I wanted. I live an hour away, and one day the weather forecast predicted very heavy fog for this location. I jumped in my car and made the one hour drive to get this shot. I wanted the tree to be completely isolated by the fog bank, yet very clear and stark for the contrast.

Technical Details

Shot with Canon RP, canon 24-105L at iso 200, f 16, 35 mm focal length, 1/160 second.

Frank, welcome to NPN and the Weekly Challenge. This is an interesting view that is quite stark and minimalist. As presented the there’s a strong, quiet and lonely feeling. As food for thought, I’m guessing that cropping (or zooming) to make the tree significantly larger in the frame may give a photo with a very different feeling.

Hi Frank,
First off, welcome to NPN! I particularly like the minimalistic mood here with the solitary tree and the surrounding fog. This portrays the feeling of isolation very nicely so I would say that you succeeded with your intention. I like this as is, but I could also see a crop from the right side to eliminate a little empty space. Just my opinion of course. Beautifully done!
