Bathing

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I caught this female western bluebird taking a bath out on our deck in some 100 degree weather. I bet it felt good.

Specific Feedback

I cropped this in such a way as to capture some droplets. Does it cause the overall look to be… lopsided?

Hi Dave, I like all the water splashing around and that totally wet bird is something else. I like this composition. I could see trying another version cropping from the bottom just eliminating the brown rail. Head of the bird looks just slightly soft to me. A very fun image.

Bluebirds do love their baths, Dave. This one looks like she’s really enjoying it. I like Allen’s suggestion for a crop. I’m not sure why the head looks slightly soft-your shooting specs would indicate that it should be fine. I have noticed on my Sonys that the Eye AF sometimes picks up on water reflections, so if you were using that feature, it might have grabbed a nearby water drop.

I didn’t divulge it but this was shot thru glass from our dining room. I knew if I eased it open for a cleaner shot it would’ve surely split.

Also probably cooler that way!

Fun catch, but contrast and saturation are high for my taste, although the BG is lovely. It feels like it needs a bit of CW rotation. Nice IQ for being shot through a door.

Hi Dave
This is just a lot of fun to view. The Bluebird is having fun, I have fun with the water droplets. ( I can remember blowup pools and the kids have as much fun as this BlueBird)
