Description

Our birdbath out on our deck was invaded this morning by a mob of western bluebirds. Not so much for drinking but for bathing. Here’s a moment I got.

They do love their baths, Dave. A nice documentary shot of this activity.

What fun! Beautiful birds having a great time. I’m glad they found your bird bath.

A bevy of beautiful bluebirds. Are they adults - or are some juveniles (maybe a family)? I’m sure you had to restock the jacuzzi after this. You did well to capture so much blue, Dave.

Alas, I have no talent for guessing who’s a kid and who’s an adult. I wondered about this too.

@Dave_Douglass @Mike_Friel There’s a mix of adults and juveniles in this batch. For adults look for blue heads and the orange breasts, though the females can make it more difficult. When really young the juveniles also have spotted breasts like the American Robin, but by this late in the season they’re mostly gone. This species is semi-social and you’ll see flocks comprised of the adults and the young of all the broods they raised over the summer (usually at least two in our area) this time of year and through the winter until the mating hormones start kicking in in the early spring.

Thanks. Good to know.

My first thought…

Rub-a-Dub-Dub bunch o’ Blue Birds in a tub.

You might consider toning down that bright reflection on the board just left of the tub.

Fun image!
