Beach Forest & Repost

Repost as Pano and taming upper right a bit:

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Wandering down the beach at Cape Disappointment earlier this week and the patterns in the sand kept catching my eye. This was supposed to be a short excursion so this was taken with my cell phone.

Specific Feedback

I did some playing with filters and blending modes to emphasize the patterns. Suggestions for alternate compositions? Other ways to go with this?

Technical Details

Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra, 6.3 mm, iso 12, f1.7, 1/750. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 3428x2209.

Oh, I like the little “tree line” in this one Dennis. Looks like an old fashioned etching. I really like the texture the shiny sand gives this. Not necessary by any means, but you might also look at making a thin pano out of this.

Nice find Dennis! The tree patterns in the sand are remarkable. I like Ed’s suggestion of a pano crop (perhaps 2:1) but the composition looks good as is. Smartphone cameras have come a long way. This one has good detail and sharpness throughout. I’d be curious how this turns in black and white.

Not sure how this would work out but the glare on the upper right from the sun is a little distracting. Perhaps a brights luminosity mask could help reign that in a bit. Althoug looking at it again, the brightness in that area does add more depth to the image.

Thanks @Ed_Williams and @Alfredo_Mora . I like the idea of a pano crop and I’ll try it in a little bit. Alfredo: I did actually go into Silver Efex for awhile on this and used one of their presets to bring out the structure more. However, when I went back into PS, I decided I preferred a brown tone to the sand so I added that in (the original looked slightly greenish, so this isn’t what came out of the camera). I’ll play with toning down the upper right a bit, though a pano crop may fix that anyhow.

I got behind and missed this one till now. Fascinating image!! A great find and looks like some fancy footwork in processing. I can go with either crop, but I do like the brighter area in the UR, and it is nicely balanced by the largest structure left of center. Maybe a compromise is the crop just from the bottom.

I’m jealous of your beach!!

I think the original uncropped image is better.

Thanks @Diane_Miller The beach is in a state park just across the Columbia from Astoria. It happens to be the same park where people get the cool waves when there’s a high tide and big surf (the reflected waves reinforce the incoming waves and create really neat effects). Unfortunately for campers, the park is very popular and reservations go quickly.

Thanks for your input, @Igor_Doncov. I like the original myself though the pano does make an interesting variation.
