Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On the beach a couple of years ago. I was trying to find something on my cell phone the other day and this caught my attention. It was just different sand formations on the beach near Cape Disappointment, but I thought it would look cooler rotated to look like a wall.

Specific Feedback

I’m mainly interested in whether the wall or cliff illusion worked.

Technical Details

Google Pixel 6a (the free one with a relatively low resolution single camera). 4.38 mm, f/1.7, 1/1150. Processed in LR & PS CC. Rotated, flipped and cropped to 2105x2252. I used an old Topaz Detail plugin to accent the curves and a curves layer to darken the shadows a bit.

Dennis,

Very cool. I really like that you’ve completely isolated the patters where the viewer has no other hints as to not only the subject, but also orientation.

I certainly can pick up the idea of a wall or cliff. But to be honest, the subject is clear enough that it’s either salt flats, or scuptured sand, that my mind tells me it’s originally a near/far comp showing all the repeating patterns. I like the comp rotated, but my brain tells me it’s rotated and for me that takes a way a little from the overall impression.

Well seen for sure and again great job isolating these patterns.

Sand it is, Lon. Thanks for the comments.
