Beech forest in winter

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This image was taken early morning during a recent trip to Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain Lake st Clair National park, in a small patch of deciduous beech forest after an overnight snowfall. My intention with this image was to explore the chaotic nature and forms of the trees within the forest, whilst also using the trunks of the foreground trees to lead the viewer into the scene and create a sense of the trees trying to navigate the maze of branches and find their way through the forest. I suppose that the composition is intended to be very loosely metaphoric.

Specific Feedback

Any and all feedback is welcome, especially suggestions on editing this image, as it is currently a direct scan of a 4x5 transparency and I wonder if I should raise the exposure somewhat. Thanks!

Technical Details

This image was taken on a 4x5 camera, with a 90mm lens at f/32. I cant remember the exact exposure time, but I think it was around 3 seconds. Slight front tilt was used to keep the entire tree trunks in focus, and the film is Kodak Ektachrome E100.

Hi Keenan,
You definitely found a cool looking gnarly tree! I like the direction you were taking this scene as the forest is chaotic. I could see simplifying it with a crop and still achieving your vision. I hope you do not mind, but here is a repost with what I was thinking. I also dodged the whites of the snow in a couple of areas. Just my opinion of course.

Hi Ed,
Thank you very much for the feedback! I think your crop works very well, and the dodging helps the exposure feel a bit more uniform. Thanks again
