Betwixt Two Trees

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I stayed up last night for the lunar eclipse. I was fortunate to have clear skies and I did not have to go anywhere, just out on my driveway, but I did have some redwood trees acting as a natural frame for the moon. I did get some photos of the moon with the longer lens, but this frame just appealed to me more.

Any thoughts on this photo are appreciated.

Technical Details

Nikon D850, Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Macro, at f4 at 1.6 sec at ISO 25600 for the sky and trees, and f8 at 1 sec ISO 1600 for the moon. The two frames were blended together. Processed in ACR and PS.

there is a slight bloom on the LL of the moon that I had a hard time with in the blend, as the image for the sky did blow out the moon.

I really enjoyed your presentation, more of a contextual shot with the stars and the trees framing the moon, instead of just a closeup, it gives more sustained interest in the image. Nicely seen!

I like this one a lot, Youssef. Very well composed.

Nice, Youseff. I really like this take on the “up through the trees” shot with moon at totality.

I went to Joshua tree, thinking the rocks would be a nice element, but totality happened with the moon too high in the sky! I should have stayed in Palm Springs and used the palm trees outside the bedroom slider and the San Jacinto mountains .

It was still quite lovely, but I chose to sit and watch it and not shoot it as I have tele moon eclipses with no foreground and didn’t want more:sweat_smile:.

It was a lovely event, and you captured it well.

This is wonderful!! You captured the red color so well and got very good tonal detail of the darker lunar seas. The trees and the sky with the stars add so much to the image.

It was striking how bright the stars became as the moon dimmed during totality.

The stars and shadowed trees give your image nice context - much better than just the moon.

This is great! Love the view through the trees! I struggled with a bit of a halo around the moon in my image too. I ended up removing the overexposed moon using a brush big enough to cover the halo, then used the brush with no feather to completely darken a circle the size of the moon. Then when I dropped my moon image in, I sized it the same as the dark spot. I think it worked pretty well.

Thanks @Paul_Holdorf for that processing tip. I will give a try as I think I will make a print of this photo.

This is a very cool image, Youssef! You’ve managed to shoot the lunar eclipse in a new and interesting way (at least to me) and because of that, I like this very much.
