Black-backed Jackal

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was a nice surprise that ended up in my favorites collection for 2024. We had a pair of jackals hunting actively in Kenya, and I was hoping to catch them in mid-air during their leaps and sprints with a low shutter speed. Unfortunately, I never got clear views, but I was still shooting with the slow shutter speed when this one trotted by.

Typically the best chance of success (which is still quite low, of course) with a wildlife motion blur occurs when panning with a profiled subject. So I didn’t really expect a 3/4 angle to turn out… but here we are!
