Black Phoebe

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A bird that was once only seen in southern Oregon, now is common throughout the Willamette Valley. I like the pose. There was a brownish colorcast over the bird, so I selected the Phoebe and put it on a black and white layer.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

A lovely background and I love the Phoebe’s pose, Allen. I’ve actually seen one of these across the border at Ridgefield NWR, so they’re continuing to spread north. I like the idea of the B&W conversion and it works well. For pixel peepers, the very tips of the tail feathers apparently didn’t get the B&W message. I don’t find it to be an issue personally.

Lovely. It’s so tough to get them to sit still for long enough so congrats on being ready for it. So much feather detail to enjoy - I personally love the white edges to those primaries. I could see about getting rid of the branch in the LRC that disrupts the diagonal harmony of the rest. Silly branch didn’t get the message. Excellent capture.

I meant to comment on this and got distracted. I really like the different idea of desaturating the bird and leaving the BG as it was – and could see doing the opposite too, just for fun. Or maybe doing both but each at maybe only 50% desaturation. Wonderful composition and a delightful BG! I’m with @Kris_Smith on the branch in the corner. And congratulations on the EP! Very well-deserved!

Very pleasing pose with excellent feather detail, nice head turn, and reasonably good background. It looks like you were pretty close. I’ve also seen these in Ridgefield. Somewhere in my collection of images, I am aware that I have one picture of the Phoebe.
