Blue Poppy Monochrome

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Shot this Blue Poppy yesterday at Weyerhauser Rhododendron Garden. I don’t do many B&W flowers but I do like how this one turned out with the Blue Silver tint and Fuji Neopan 400 film simulation which added a considerable amount of grain. It made the bokeh appear muddled which makes sense. I also thought about flipping it so the bloom faced west but stayed with this.

Specific Feedback

-General impression and opinions.

Technical Details

Nikon Z7ll
Zeiss 100mm Macro Planar f2 w/circ pol

Aperture f4*

*This is an older lens that does not communicate aperture info to the camera so f4 is just a probable guess.

An interesting take on this poppy, Bruce. It’s been years since I’ve been up to the Rhododendron garden, but it was always interesting. The poppy is incredibly sharp but I find myself wishing for a bit more contrast from the background. You might be able to get more pop with some color separation before converting it to b&w.

I agree with Dennis . Maybe a little more contrast… I am not aware of Blue Silver Tint or Fuji400 film simulation. Really an interesting Image … The simplicity is what drew me in. Very Cool… Im an old film guy and to use a software to simulate film ??? I am in the DARK… I love the old masters Edward Weston .A Adams and others. Film photography has this Non Perfect kind of vibe to me … Very natural and I use digital Photography to get that look. Tell me More. Does Photoshop have this editing in it. Your macro does not communicate f stops. Is it an old piece of glass. My Nikkor 1979 is the same. Great lens in my opinion … 55mm and does real sharp work. Hope to get feedback …Thanks

Thanks for the comments @Dennis_Plank @Gill_Vanderlip .
Gil the blue silver tint and Fuji Neopan 400 film simulation are options in NIK Silver Efex…one of the programs in the Nik Collection which is an editing suite now owned by DXO. Silver Efex is the B&W program that includes many tools and filters to tweak your B&W images. I use it on all of mine. The Blue Silver is just a custom preset that I created simply by choosing the blue tone and adjusting the silver slider to get the look I preferred. I saved it and can apply it to any image I have open in Silver Efex. The program has a long list of film simulations. By hovering over a film type it shows what your image will look like when applied. Then you can make any adjustments to that after you apply it.
I known nothing about film and have no idea how accurate these simulations are but they are fun to use The program is pretty deep, very flexible and not too complex. There are 8 separate editing programs within The NIK Collection and it’s a great value IMO. You may be able to download just Silver Efex but not sure.

That lens hit the market in 2006 so not extremely old but no it doesn’t communicate with the camera. Aperture adjustment are done with the aperture ring.

Bruce: Nicely conceived and expertly processed and presented. I do very little B&W but agree with the others regarding a touch more contrast. Nice to see an out of the box image. >=))>

thanks Bill
