Bonaparte's Gull Portrait

What technical feedback would you like if any?

How did I handle the whites. I could have pulled them back more, but thought this version looks good to my eye.

What artistic feedback would you like if any?

Any compositional suggestions for bird portraits?

Any pertinent technical details:

I rarely get close to Bonaparte’s gulls so I took advantage of this one’s curiosity…Jim

I like the nearly square composition, Jim, and the inclusion of the top of the wing. The whites look fine. Bringing them down any further would have made them gray instead of white. I do think you could try adding a touch of light to the face.

Excellent image.

Thank you Dennis. …Jim

This is a very nice, sharp portrait. I like your crop and think you cut the bird in a nice spot. Your 4x5 works well. A square crop would also work and still give room in front of him. If it were mine, I’d try to brighten it up just a bit.
