Description
Some dark boulders that had apparently rolled down into this ravine in the Bentonite Hills area of Capitol Reef National Park. I waited for the morning sunlight to shine onto the clay just out of frame on the left side, which provided some reflected light into this little ravine.

Brad, welcome to NPN and the weekly challenge! The big curve of big rocks surrounded by the bentonite looks very good. The touch of color near the bottom of the wash adds well to the view. While this looks very good as presented, I suggest you consider two modest tweaks to see what you think; 1) some burning-in of the cracks (dark tones) in the most distant hillside would add more texture there and reduce the fading into the distance feeling or 2) a slight crop off the top. I think that either of these would make the view more intimate, which you may or may not want, the choice is yours.
Very nice section of tonal values, Shapes, textures, and contrast between the colors of the rocks and the sands. I’d like the Hi, key affect. Well done.
I love the way the rocks lead you into the frame and the play of color with the dark rocks and the play of red in the sand. Really interesting picture and great composition.
Welcome!
Excellent first post-
I love the perspective and the detail in the sand. The high-key treatment works well, and the position of the rocks leads the eye into the far reaches of the ravine perfectly.
I agree with mark’s suggestions, for a possible alternative.
Really fine work!
I look forward to your participation and more great images!
This is a fascinating image Brad. I love the dark rocks on the lighter cracked ravine. Nice curve to lead my eye through the frame. I agree with Mark’s suggestions to put a bit more detail into the very top of the frame. Cool post, and especially a first post. Welcome to NPN.
Mark: I updated the image per your suggestion, adding some contrast to the far background with a curves layer (I’m a bit of a curves layer fanatic). Definitely adds some life to the background.
Well done on the edit Brad. You can put the re-post in front of the original post if you go into the edit function at the bottom of the original post section. Just copy the new edition and paste it above the first image. That way it is easier for viewers to compare the two images. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
