Description

Photographed whilst on a walk - did know these were around - so carried my 800 in a back pack

Specific Feedback

Quite open to any suggestions.

SHot at iso 800, f/ 6.3

Processed in LR - did use LR Denoise - took 8-10 minutes on my Mac (3.2 GHz, Intel i7 - 64 gb ram ) - why this long ?

Technical Details

Hi Karl, great capture - love the interaction shown here. The outright tail on the left kit is great and the open mouths of both are wonderful. Great open setting.
Glad you took your photo gear on your walk! Well done.

These two look terrific! Frisky and full of energy. Mom and dad must be doing a great job. I love that bushy tail and the setting looks so open and like it must smell good. Good on you for bringing the big gun.

In terms of denoise in Lr, I believe it is quite graphics processor heavy. I know my old 4gb card in the Lenovo wouldn’t be up to the task at all so I’m quite thankful that I went with the M2 Max processor and the 38-core GPU for my new Macbook - denoise done in 7 seconds. Seriously. With 1/2 the RAM you have. You could try updating your settings in Lr and see if it makes a difference.

My setting is auto for full speed, but if you’ve customized it, things may not be as fast as possible. This is what the custom menu looks like -

Am going back to Auto!

THanks @Kris_Smith

Mine is set on Auto - purged the cache - no difference - still taking 13 minutes for a 45 mP file - something else is a miss

Thanks @Allen_Sparks !

What a wonderful photo! Made me laugh out loud…especially with your title. I love the softness of the colours and the background balanced with the details and texture of the pups and foreground.

I can’t quite put my finger on the crop…it seems a little off balance…I think I am wanting the pups moved to the left and almost centred…that would give the lower pup a bit more power in the relationship. Just a thought…this photo is wonderful as is as well.

Wonderful capture of these playful kits! I have the M1 MacBook Pro with only 16 GB RAM. But everything (and especially the graphics processor) is a vast improvement over the older i7. I just timed a denoise at 30 sec (on a 45 MP file), compared to 6 seconds for Topaz Denoise Low Light in PS. And I much prefer the control I have in Topaz.

This is a great capture. But the foxes look just a touch soft to me. Was your shutter speed fast enough for a handheld 800?

Great body language and wonderful interaction here.
I may crop little bit of canvas on the left.
Although one can see the sharp whiskers, but it lacks the fine details, may be because of handholding 800 mm and or shutter speed.

Hello Karl, this is a lovely moment to have captured! Playful, energetic, but I would agree that it doesn’t seem to be sharp on the foxes. It could be shutter speed, but it could also be your lens at that aperture, and you may want to run a test. Good capture overall, but those cute foxes need to be tack sharp for it to really work.

1/2500 sec - but not sharpened since I was trying LR Denoise

Thanks @Allen_Sparks , @Kris_Smith , @Robena.Sirett , @JRajput , @Diane_Miller , @Charles_Bell

Settings : 1/2500 sec, ISO 640, F/6.3 - mirrorless Z9 with 800 lens handheld - used LR DeNoise - took forever to process - just ordered the Mac Studio - apparently the M1 Mini GPU is the problem and external GPUs are a pain to handle
But the bottom line is that I did not do any sharpening on the 1st image posted. This one has some details brought out - hopefully salvageable now

Hope you like the new gear. I’m enjoying the heck out of my M2 Max MacBook Pro. The other day I hit 10 photos with the denoise AI function and the fans came on! They hardly ever do so I couldn’t figure out what the noise was for a second.

Just ordered - arriving end July

I’ve been on the road without time to respond but I the OP clearly shows that focus hit the grasses in front of the foxes. The DOF at those settings would have been very small. The SS should have stopped most motion from the foxes and from handholding – I think it’s just a plane of focus issue.

The second one is subtly sharper and I don’t think you would want to go beyond that. Definitely salvageable! I had to open another browser window to compare the two – you should add revisions to the original window using the edit icon so they can be compared directly.
