The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
this was taken in Costa Rica at a farm where they cater to wild amphibians. It was a pretty amazing place. These were in a lighted area but it was quite dark and even with a fill flash I was able to get a picture with a black background. I have some others without the black background but I like the pose the frog giving me.

One of my favorites from Central America. The flash looks pretty good, but lighting could be softer–Big diffuser helps. These are nocturnal critters so the black BG is acceptable. A very nice portrait of the red-eyed treefrog…Jim
Very cool! A fun subject, very sharp with great color. It actually looks to me as though there was some diffusion as the shadow edges aren’t completely hard. And probably enough ambient light to soften the flash more.
Cool subject and nice pose ! I agree about the harsh light, you may reduce the luminosity of the flower.
It looks as if the critical focus is on RHS eye instead of left eye.
Agreeing with above comments, I would add that I wonder what a different crop would achieve. I don’t really like tight crops and wonder what the original photo is and if it would be possible to make it a 3:2 portrait ratio. If not, what about a less tight square crop? In any case, it’s a beautiful shot of a beautiful frog. Wow, those colours!
Grt, Ingrid.
One of my favorite species down there. Is it safe to assume this animal was either captive or at least manipulated to pose on the flower?
I think the crop works well given the diagonal lean of the flower.
Regarding diffusion, I agree with the previous comments. Lighting for macro is something I’ve struggled with for ages. Only recently have I found a couple of solutions I liked that were relatively easy to use. If you’re looking for a solid but basic diffuser—should you opt for more macro in the future—Cygnustech makes custom-made diffusers relatively inexpensively, and they work pretty well for folks who don’t put a lot of time into figuring this stuff out (like myself ).
