Clef Notes or Caligraphy?

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Whimsical grab shot. We were at Asilomar St. Beach in Pacific Grove; took the grand kids to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and then spent some time at the beach. I was just watching the kids run from the surf and grabbed a few image here and there. I actually liked the arrangement of this capture and thought I would post.

Specific Feedback

Curious to learn if this appeals to anyone. Once I saw some patterns in the receeding surf, I began walking the beach looking for some comps - all the while keeping an eye on the grand kids.

A minimal crop and some border patrol cleanup, but for the most part presented as captured. I did emphasize the whites a little to bring out the bubbles. PS & ACR with a run thru Topaz.

As always, I appreciate any comments, suggestions and general impressions.

Technical Details

Handheld, Nikon Z7ii, z24-200mm, @83mm, f/6.3 1/640ths, iso 80

La musica del mar. It does look like a G clef somewhat. It’s truly amazing what we can find at our feet if we really look. This is nicely seen and done, Lon.

The colors and tonality are very subtle, and the bubbles are a nice touch. I wouldn’t change a thing.

This looks great Lon. It’s nicely whimsical as well as interesting. The various colors of the strands adds lots of interest, while the bubbles show of the photog, if you look carefully.

Very nice. It’s abstractual in a way. If you squint enough you can see a Kandinsky here. It’s the graceful curves that make this picture for me. One idea that came to me when I enlarged this was to use the bubbles more prominently in the composition. I don’t know how easy that would be given that everything is moving. Perhaps you tried that.

Nice, Lon. I feel this is one of the best images of this type I’ve seen. The colors, graceful patterns, and to top it off, the bubbles, all add up to a fine image.

Lon,

Great composition and I really like how you have accentuated the bubbles. I don’t know music so I don’t see musical notes but the curving lines and subtle colors makes an easy-on-the-eyes photo to enjoy.

Very nice, and well seen. As others have said, the bubbles really work in this image.

Hi Lon,
This most definitely appeals to me! Grab shot or not this is outstanding. I find the color palette to be very harmonious and serene and I love how you filled the frame with all these graceful lines. The bubbles also look great. Sometimes it just pays to look down. Beautifully done.

Thank you so much @Preston_Birdwell , @Mark_Seaver , @Igor_Doncov , @Michael_Lowe , @Youssef_Ismail, @WillR and @Ed_Lowe ! I appreciate your response and comments!

“The music of the sea!” I LOVE that! Thanks Preston! That will stick with me on all my future visits to the ocean!

omg Mark! I didn’t even see that. And I thought I did pixel-peeping on reviewing images. Good catch!

Thank you Igor - you know I had to Google Kandinsky - and wow, I can also see how you referenced his work - I can see why. Cool. As far as the bubbles, I think for several, the bubbles stood out. I’m glad because I did mask and boost the whites a bit to make sure the bubbles didn’t get lost in the sand
I can see isolating them more, but in this particular frame, I didn’t want to lose the “Treble Clef” note. At least that’s what I see.

Thanks Ed - Absolutely! I think most of us here tend to always look around, up and down, etc., beyond whatever subject we may be working on at any given moment. And some times it pays off!

Thanks again everyone!

Actually, ‘ocean’ translates to ‘ocĂ©ano’, while ‘sea’ translates to ‘mar’. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Holy cow!! I thought this was interesting in the thumbnail and then I clicked on it and saw the bubbles!!! How totally and completely cool!!

This is the Kandinsky I had in mind.

Lon very nice! This image would keep my attention for a very long time if mounted on my wall. Nice capture!

Thank you @Diane_Miller and @pat2 for chiming in. Much appreciated.

And yes Igor, I see the connection and agreed especially after I googled Kandinsky’s work. :+1:

And thank you so much for the EP! Was not expecting that!

This sort of shot always appeals to me the squiggles textures and hemispheres make a wonderful pot pourri of shapes on a gentle pallet of hues where shape takes precedence over vibrancy. Very nice and pleasing to the eye.
