Coastal Thunderstorm

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Brookings, OR
We get amazing thunderstorms here on the South Coast, often with intense colours and lightning. This is probably one of the most spectacular skies we have witnessed in the 12 years we have lived here.
The Oregon coast is known for its dramatic weather patterns, including frequent thunderstorms, especially during the late spring and summer months. The combination of warm, moist air from the Pacific Ocean and cooler air masses moving inland can create the instability needed for these storms to develop.

Did you enhance the color Sandy…So intense and amazing. Catching lightning is really hard in my opinion. The Intense Clouds blow me away. WOW !!!

Gil, I actually took the sat down a touch to balance the dark waves better. Intense skies like this are not uncommon on the Oregon Coast - here is a Thanksgiving sunset I posted awhile back, whose colours were confirmed by Bill Fach:

Actually, Capturing lightning is very simple with the software I used. Set it and forget it!

Sandy: Spectacular scene and your lightning capture is something I’m not familiar with. I spent many summers in Yachats as a kid and can’t recall a single thunderstorm. Of course I was there in non-stormy months and it is significantly further north. We get lots of thunderstorms here but no interesting foreground near the house. In fact we’ve had two pretty good ones in the past two days and one is clearing now. As for your image, a great capture of a foreboding but beautiful moment. >=))>

VERY eye-catching scene, and all that lightning is icing on the cake. I’m also not familiar with a lightning software. Sure served you well. What a mood!

Now that’s what I call a dramatic sky. Very fitting for the week’s challenge. Just curious, what software/process did you use to blend the different exposures together?
