Completely lost the plot - Pulpit Rock, Australia

Hey team,

I’ve been working on this edit for over a week now, trying to push the editing further than I normally do. But I can’t get to a place where I’m even close to happy.

I’m now pretty frustrated with this photo and I figured I’d post it here to see what you would do with it.

I’m including a dropbox link with the blended .dng & the original 5x raw files I used. Depending on how deep you want to go.

There’s been several iterations of this edit, starting fresh out of the previously mentioned frustration. But my uploaded edited version went as follows (roughly):

During shooting:
f11, iso100, 15 seconds to start; followed by 30 seconds as the light was changing. Just trying to keep histogram output matched.

Basic adjustments in LR, chromatic aberration, opening up shadows.

Photoshop: Layer alignment, Exposure blend…

Foreground - Dodging & Burning using Luminosity masks - aim was to bring dimension into the rocks & bring out tonality in the golden yellows, as well as brightening some of the water flow.

The sky, is where I’m super unhappy. I played with so much dodging and burning, colour grading; trying to bring more detail in the clouds and balance colour. But things kept going off track for me. I kept staying way too cool or it would get far too sensational for my taste (i.e. the uploaded edited version)

Thank you for your time - Excited to see some different outputs!

James

My Edit

Lovely image. your’s has more drama but …

Instead of going for heavy values, I decided to make it brighter and more colorful, emphasizing some of the seaweed…

in RAW working on the single file, apply this curve (no sharpening)
curve

and then

Thanks for taking a crack Bill - So good to see other perspectives!

What a great image, James! It has so much drama and energy. Here is my take on it, if you have any questions on what I’ve done let me know.

Hey Tom, sorry for the late reply. I love what you did with the sky. Much better! Was this mainly dodging and burning with colour?

Thanks for taking a crack on this.

James

Hey James, I deleted your raw file with my edits from my computer a few days ago so I’m not 100% sure but I think the majority of that effect is a combination of Highlight and Shadow recovery and the “Exposure” adjustment layer in Photoshop. The “Exposure” adjustment layer is something I’ve been experimenting with quite a bit recently. I create an “Exposure” adjustment layer, slide the “Exposure” slider down to around -1 to -1.5 depending on the image and then mask that with a black/white circular gradient. This creates kind of a vignette but a different looking one and I find it really helps sculpt the light in images.
