Coreopsis

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I went out a few days ago to photograph some disease or insect damage on a couple of honeysuckle vines but couldn’t resist spending a few minutes on these while I was there. Our neighbor across the street planted these a number of years ago and they died at her place, but established themselves in the ditch on our side of the road, then sent an exploration party further onto our property and established a beachhead in a small wildflower garden behind our house. While they’re cultivars, we like them and they go well with the Oregon Sunshine that forms some of the background blooms in this image.

Specific Feedback

We don’t do formal gardens by any stretch of the imagination, so I was trying to capture a bit of the randomness of this bed in the image. For the same reason, I didn’t spend time repairing the holes in the petals in processing. There was a pretty good breeze, so this was a single shot.

Technical Details

Sony A1, FE 70-200 f/4 macro @ 121 mm, handheld, f/16, 1/1250, iso 6400. Noise reduction in DxO PureRaw5, processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 6354x4792. A bit of texture boost to the petals of the two main characters using an old Topaz plugin. A touch of cloning in the upper right corner where I caught the edge of the bricks that border the bed. Taken June 20th at 8:34 a.m. under overcast skies.

Dennis: I like your thought processes and how you conceived and executed this shot. The DOF works well for me and as one who still enjoys single capture and the challenges of it I like this a lot. Most excellent. >=))>

Dennis, it’s hard not to like an image with such cheerful colors. Coreopsis are one of my favorites.
