Description
When I have extra time between trips I try to catch up on reprocessing older collections, since a lot of ~pre-2014 content is still missing from my online photo archive. Most recently, I went back to 2007 to rework the photos from the trips I took to Yellowstone National Park that year.
It was a significant period for me, at least when it comes to Yellowstone (the place that, more than any other, helped boost my career as a professional photographer). I had already fallen in love with the park by then, but it wasn’t until 2007 that I finally made a trip in late spring… and discovered that it’s the most magical time of year for wildlife. The May '07 trip remains my favorite visit of all time, and the first day of it was simply bonkers: an all-time wolf encounter, my first badger, my first displaying grouse, bears… and two active coyote dens. This den site in particular was incredibly photogenic.
Max, this is a fine catch of the three pups and their den. The one on the left looks to be thoroughly enjoying the sunshine. While it may be important for the two pups in the shadow, the brightes parts feel a bit too bright, especially on the rock face. Early spring in the park is magical, but it’s getting more and more crowded, which makes the magic harder to find…
A great catch, Max. The pose of the outside pup looks great. I think the overall brightness could come down quite a bit. It won’t hurt to have the pups in the den a little dark-creates a surprise for the viewer when they see them.
Wow, almost 20 years ago. Sounds like an absolutely amazing day, Max. I’ve never been to Yellowstone in the Spring or the Winter but I’m taking care of the Winter portion with you in 28. Can’t wait.
That one pup on the left seems to be enjoying the morning air. A great look that one with a very nice pose. The other two are certainly part of the story but to a much lesser degree so I agree with what’s been said about bringing the shadows down a bit letting the viewer know they’re there but not so prominent. I could also see bringing the entire scene down a third of a stop or so. I’m seeing this on my phone so don’t hold me to that last comment.
Terrific image,Max. It reminds me to go through my ancient catalogues to try and find and reprocess images like this.
It’s pretty much cheating to share a photo of baby critters! Love this shot! It does seem a bit bright but I’m sure it’s faithful to the conditions as you shot it. I bet a little slide to the left with highlights would take some harshness away. Really great shot!
