Image Description
The African wild dog is always at the top of our bucket list when we’re in South Luangwa. Lions and leopards are relatively easy to spot there, as their territory is well-known to the local guides. But knowing that wild dogs call an area up to 3,000 km² home, and South Luangwa covers 9,000 km², and that wild dogs can cover up to 40 km a day, it’s always a highlight to encounter them somewhere along their journey.
Because of this unpredictability, we stay in different locations within the reserve. This increases our chances of seeing these highly successful hunters. On our last trip, we were lucky enough to find a pack of pups just outside our camp. We were able to watch and photograph the pups playing for about an hour. Then the pack departed on its next journey. The next day, we found them again a few kilometers away. I still need to sort out those photos. The photo below is from that first day near our camp.
