Dead Leaves, Tree Bark and Mushrooms

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This started off as a photo of some random dead leaves, tree bark and mushrooms in a forest near Ocala, Florida. I started playing with it in Lightroom and then later in Photoshop just experimenting with variations of techniques and manipulations. At some point I liked what I saw and saved it. Can I replicate it?

No

I would be interested in whether you think this has any place in "art photography at all…

I think everything has a place in “art” photography, Pieter. I do like this. The bold tones and blocky color splashes make an intriguing composition with just enough of the original left to identify that mushrooms at least were one of the original constituents.

Hi Pieter
I selected this photo in the overview because you caught my interest with the thumbnail. However, when I zoom in, I find the sharpness is lacking. And then, when I read your description, it sounds like you take random photos and then see what you can do with them in post processing. Or am I wrong there? In any case, for me the joy of photography is about thinking in advance, and then executing so that I immediately have the desired effect. Yes, you’ve got it, I’m not a post-processor .
So: I like the abstract of your photo, it’s like a painting. But I keep wondering what it would look like with minimal post processing.
All the best, Ingrid.

Thank you Ingrid. Your assumption about my photographic workflow is indeed incorrect, as assumptions often are. As you can see in the technical details that I supplied, taking the photograph in question did require some thinking in advance. However, when I examined the results of my execution I was not happy with it, and so I started playing with it, and that playing WAS rather random, as playing often is.
When I saw this week’s challenge, I remembered the photo I played with six years ago, and posted it. I am glad you liked it in the context of the challenge.

Here is the original.

Thank you, Dennis. As always, I appreciate your positive feedback.

Thanks for enlightening me, Pieter! I had misread your description and thought it was an assembly of photoS (plural), sorry about that. And indeed, in the context of the challenge, it is quite cool :upside_down_face:
Have a nice weekend!
Ingrid.
