Early Spring Colors

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

There was a light mist this particular day and the muted early spring colors caught my eye right away. I found the warm tones as well as the earth tones to be very inviting. This is another of my busy woodland scenes so I tried to organize the trees throughout so that it would not be to chaotic. This area is on land that is being quarried and is only 10 minutes from my home; so when the conditions look promising I can easily check it out. I also found those two darker main trees to be quite interesting.

Specific Feedback

Just wondering if the image is to busy for everyone? Also, how do you feel about that green patch of grass nestled in the russet colored grasses toward the LLC? I thought about cloning them out, but I thought I would see how others felt about them. Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Technical Details

Nikon D800, Nikon 80-200 @ 155 mm, f 14 @ 1/8 sec, ISO 200, CPL, cable release & tripod

OMG! This is one of your best ever. I like this far more than the blooming trees and tree arrangements. Compared to the other ones it’s real, not artsy, if you know what I mean. It’s a natural beauty without arresting compositions. It just seems more honest to me. But that’s only part of it. The color combinations are great. They go together. And the dark shapes rising out of the brush is great as well. They give it structure. The tree on the left is particularly beautiful. A bit more space on the right would have been good. And there’s all that texture throughout, fine texture from all those bare branches. You could have made a fine vertical from the left half of the image.

Not busy at all. I think @Igor_Doncov nailed it and I totally agree with his comment. The composition is perfectly balanced and the subtle but effective variation in color is striking.

Beautiful image, sir! I’ve been enjoying this series of photos.

Ed,

Oh My! The emerging spring - the gift that keeps on giving. I can’t say it any better than Igor, but I can pile on… this is gorgeous! I even love the sprinkling of pale greens amongst the reds in the LL.

The slight misty conditions in the upper half really elevate the mood and atmosphere.

The colors are so very nuanced and complimentary throughout.

I’m hard pressed to find any nits or make any suggestions. Ok, just one minor suggestion hardly worth mentioning - but you know me. lol. The small, dark branch/stick in the very bottom LRC. Perhaps some mitigation either by dodging, lowering contrast there, cropping, cloning… Again, this is NOT a deal breaker, but just the idea of making an outstanding image, just a hair better. IMHO.

I’ll add my kudos to everyone else’s. This is gorgeous. I love that little green bush in the middle of the reddish clump in the LLC. No nits at all.

Gorgeous!! All said above! I love the little green bush – it breaks up that corner and adds some balance. No criticism of this version but as a twofer I want to dwell on the top half, with the little pink leaves or flowers against the gray with the network of branches and trunks. But maybe that isn’t so easy to isolate, and better left as a prize to be discovered.

Ed, I am with @Igor_Doncov who can say it so much better than me. Ben

This is great Ed. Strong composition with the two dominant trees and other interesting elements spaced out across the frame. The atmosphere is terrific. Colors are superb. I think that left tree is the most interesting in this roadside location. No way would I get rid of the green patch. It helps anchor that side and is nicely balanced by the greens on the right.

Ed, you’ve captured a lovely, pensive mood here. The spring colors look great and having them fade due to the fog at the top adds a good perspective. The two “main” trees stand out and make for nicely balanced viewing. It’s super picky, but there’s an oof lighter spot against the right edge about halfway down…

I made a very small crop adjustment. The change is small. It seems to spread the two trees apart and give a sense of greater space. Hmmmm. I’m not sure. You decide.

No, it feels more cramped. Sorry.

This is very nice. It has a good range of early spring colors and I think the two main trees add some structure to the image that keeps it from becoming too chaotic, I like the way their bare branches meet in the middle.
