Earthshine

Sometimes on a very clear night you can see earthshine on the crescent moon – light reflected from the earth. It is very dim and the lighted part of the crescent is hugely brighter. A couple of times I’ve managed a semblance of a decent capture. This is the best one, from 2 years ago.

Is this a composite: No
Canon 5D4, Canon 600mm f/4 + 2X at f/8, ISO 3200, 1/125 sec. and 0.5 sec. Combined by hand, tediously. I did a composite layer and did NR with the new Topaz, and got improvement. Full frame, not cropped, so there was some subject movement in the longer exposure, but it wasn’t that apparent due to the thermal softening of the air. It was about 5 am so not very high in the sky.

Handling the high contrast of this situation is very challenging, Diane. You’ve done well here with decent detail (and low noise) in the darks along with good detail in the “smile”.
