I’m wondering whether the mood or feeling I was aiming for comes through.?
I’m not sure what mood you were aiming for, James, but to me this instills a feeling of awe at the pure shapes of the formation. I’m finding I prefer this to the standard color renditions of this canyon because the black and white emphasizes the forms instead of the admittedly gorgeous colors. While the darkness of the left wall does contribute an interesting twist to the mood, I think bringing it up just a touch to allow the forms to come out more would emphasize what appeals to me most about this image.
Hello James, I also don’t know what you were aiming for, but if it was a sense of awe and wonder, well, you nailed it. This photo jumped out at me from the collection. You have really brought forth the sense of movement in the rocks.
You didn’t mention what mood you were trying to achieve but you achieved a stunning image. I think the black and white conversion was a good choice, it really accentuates the curving lines in the wall. I would like to see a little more detail in the left side of the image. I think the light contrast is great, but lifting the shadows a little more would give a little more definition and add to the image as a whole.
BW in Antelope canyon. Why did I not think about that? Of course, one needs to find the exact spot and angle where the lines match to create the perfect feeling of awe and wonder of how water, wind and sun made it all possible. The picture for me is perfect as it is. Thank you for pushing me to look at my (much more common) pictures of the place again.
James, converting to high contrast b&w does a great job of showing off the shapes and textures here. Interestingly, I see a human torso in the shadows on the left. I do think that a slight bit of dodging in the middle dark sections (visual notes) might work add a touch more interest, being careful not to brighten the blacks.
This is very different but very effective use of black and white. We are so used to seeing color images of Antelope Canyon that the thought of black and white is almost out of the question. How could you leave all that color behind?
Wow, a black and white of one of the most colorful landscapes in the world. Who would have thought? This is so good. It really emphasizes lines, shapes and tones over color. This is the perfect section of the canyon to showcase this technique. It has tremendous depth because of all of the texture, shadows and light.
I actually like the dark left wall apposing the brighter right wall letting those curves and dips and swirls be the eye candy of this image. The only thing that catches my eye is the dark black along the right edge of the frame.
This is fantastic. I see this as a compelling work of art. When viewed large, and I suspect it would be even better on a larger screen, the dark areas become slightly less saturated. My personal taste is for fairly dark images anyway, so this one really speaks to me. I love it just the way it is. It has absolutely every shade between black and white.
Excellent B&W conversion James! It really shows off the lines and textures of the canyon better than the color versions do (I did a sepia toned B&W series of Antelope Canyon about 10 years ago and it is amazing the difference in what the eye goes to in a color version versus a B&W version. I love it as presented, I like the very dark areas, except I would be tempted to crop out the dark areas on the right to make it a more Yin-Yang type of composition will just light on the right. Well done!
I appreciate all of your comments and the depth of the comments is well received. I am considering purchasing a larger monitor , since I am working with a Mac Book Pro 16 inch …I hope it will help me see the finer points where correction might be warranted .
