Etching Winter

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I don’t do abstract very often, but running with the theme of minimalism I thought I’d add one more image for this (oops, last) week.

I was back on Mazama Ridge in February of this year, and although the snow patterns and light weren’t like 2021 there was still some stuff to play with. This image is of the area down and to the left of my prior post.

Specific Feedback

Again, I don’t do abstract often, so any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. (I’ll post the image this was cropped from below.)

Technical Details

NIKON Z 7II
NIKKOR Z 24-200 f/4-6.3 VR at 145.0 mm
1/400 sec. at f/10.0 and ISO 64
(In contrast to my prior post, hopefully I copied the correct lens this time. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

Hi John, This is quite a delicate image you have shared with us. But, for me, it’s very delicacy is obscuring the really nice detail and shape. I think you could add some more contrast to help us see the fine detail you are showing us without spoiling the high key effect you are after. Well seen though!

John, I agree with Guy, that this is a fine, subtle view with lots of interesting lines and textures. I’m sitting here thinking about how I’d feel if it were hanging on my wall. That has me thinking that it may be too subtle, wondering about some work to get more contrast the ribs in the lower left and reducing the grey along the two ridges near the top. Here’s my attempt…

I burned in the lower left using an L1 - L3 luminosity mask (to mostly change the darker light tones) and dodged the upper ridges also using that L1 - L3 luminosity mask.

Thank you @guy and @Mark_Seaver for the feedback! Mark, that looks great and I do think it is an improvement.
