Description
I had gone over to the Kilgore Falls area of Rocks SP, MD to photograph the waterfall. After hiking down to the falls I was dismayed to find this huge tree that had fallen down and was now currently residing in an upright position next to the falls; so I decided to turn my attention elsewhere. While on the trail I came across these tree roots that formed this natural staircase up the embankment. After spending a couple of minutes trying to find a composition where the roots filled the frame in a pleasing pattern I arrived at this. The image was basically nothing but brown tones so I thought this was the perfect candidate for a B&W.

Ed, My most recent visit to Kilgore Falls happened when a Baltimore group was shooting a movie, so there were people everywhere…
You’ve got a good collection of roots criss crossing the frame. I find two items catching my eyes, the little plant in the lower right and fern peeking out near the top center. I could see getting in closer, especially to that fern. I also wonder how some more contrast would look. Views like this are fun to try, but I find them extremely challenging…
Very nicely composed, for my taste! Very interesting patterns and I think the tonalities are just right. I love the other kind of contrast provided by the two little plants. Wonderful find, well presented, and a very nice second prize!
