Description
My aim was to capture the intensity, stillness and barrenness of the desert landscape. This sunset shot provided a stark silhouette of the flax plants, many of which have lost their foliage depicting a struggle for survival. It was captured in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Specific Feedback
Does the colour palette and silhouette effectively convey the emotions that I aimed to capture. i wondered whether I should crop in from the sides a bit but felt that it may lose the sense of vastness of the landscape.

I think you have fulfilled your intention for this picture most admirably. The colour palette is wonderful, particularly the gradation and does, indeed, evoke the desert feel that you are aiming for. And this is an excellent use of silhouette in amplifying the starkness of this desert scene. I also might be inclined to crop but not from the sides, which would diminish the sense of expansiveness. But I think you could afford to take some off the top and from what I assume is a 16:9 aspect ratio to something a bit more panoramic. I’m not sure all that dark area on top adds and lessening it might give even more of a sense of expanse. Very nicely seen and executed.
Photographs employing the silhouette are far and few in between. It’s not easy to pull them off even though they seem easy to make. I think what grabbed me by your photo is the delicateness of the flaxen against an otherwise barren world. I think you were successful. I would not crop a thing.
I, too, like the delicacy of the flax seed pods against the sky. The decision on whether to crop it seems to me is based on whether to emphasize the vastness of the desert or that delicateness of the outline of the plants by making them more prominent. I would vote for the latter.
This is wonderful!! Any of the suggested crops can work, for the various reasons suggested, but I think I love your choice the most. Well seen and executed!
