Forked Tongue

Shallow DOF

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Cold and snow are in the forecast for tomorrow and we are already below freezing which has marked the end of our mild fall and winter. Chrissy and I spent the better part of Sunday covering plants and moving pots into the garage. This is one of our little succulents that has been doing well so we brought it inside for some pampering. Of course the price it had to pay was to do some modelling for me in my bathroom “studio”. I did a full stack and also liked the version with the shallow DOF and some focus fall off. >=))>

Specific Feedback

The comps are very similar but I did change the camera position ever so slightly. BG is some scrap mat board.

@Bill_Fach , oh this is a tough call. I like them both – likely for the same reasons you do. The overall sharpness of the one has some very nice details to get lost in as I move up the stem. The shallow DOF on the other leads my eye right to the fork. Nice use of the high key background to also bring out the details. One small thing on the second image is the one leaf at the lower end of the stem on the left. A little too tight to the edge for me. More on the edge? Or maybe clone it out.

I like both, Bill, but I prefer the stack, mostly because I prefer the composition with a bit more room on the right in that one (easy to fix with a white background). The curve of the plant is gorgeous.
