Description
While visiting Blackwater NWR we had left the reserve and was going back to the entrance to make another circle through when we noticed an Eagle out in an old corn field that had been harvested. We soon realized why, he had found a free lunch from where a deer had been hit by a car and didn’t get far away from the road before dying from its injuries.
Specific Feedback
I took this from inside a vehicle before we got enough shots to attempt getting out without scaring him. We were successful. Does it look eye level enough? I was shooting down slightly. How’s the crop, okay? I trying to go with an 8X10 and thinking about framing it. Would you do that with dead deer? I like that the face of the deer isn’t really visible.

Taken with Canon R5, Sigma 150-600 mm at 531 mm (not sure why) but I think I could have used the full 600mm because I cropped this some. 1/800, f6.3, ISO (auto) 1000. Edited lightly in LR.

This looks like a low enough angle for my taste, Shirley. A nice catch. Whether it gets framed or not is purely a matter of personal taste. You got a nice image here and it’s not really gory since it doesn’t look as if the hide has been penetrated by anything yet. We had a pair of eagles feeding on road kill near here a couple of months back and it was on a blind curve, so I managed to toss it into a field on far enough to keep them off the road.

Great looking Eagle. The framing works for me, but you may want to remove the metal clip, that is in the lower half of the frame. Nice work.

Very interesting, Shirley. I’d be tempted to crop off a bit from the top, which might give the feeling that you were crouching down, and also to bring the subjects closer. There’s just enough gore (on beak and deer) to show that the eagle had more than a passing interest in the meal. I wonder what other creatures, if any, helped to polish off this roadkill.
Great capture, Shirley - sweet low angle and nice eye on the bird. I also , with you, like that the deer’s face is obscured - that leaves the focus on the eagle, and the bits of blood make it real. Fine detail and environment. This would work well as a 5x7 iteration also. Definitely a wall-hanger!
