The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This image is from a recent trip to one of Tasmania’s many mountain plateaus. It depicts a Richea pandanifolia and other endemic heath plants coated in early morning frost. In making this image, I was attracted to the subtle complementary colours of the Pandani, frost and other plants, as well as showing how intertwined they had grown. With this image, my intention was to convey my sense of wonder at the nature of the place where this image was taken, through the vibrant and flowing limbs of the pandani that seamlessly nestles itself into its environment and the colours of the plants included in the scene.
Specific Feedback
I would appreciate feedback on the composition and emotional impact (if any). Advice on the aesthetic qualities of the image and on any potential changes that could benefit the image through editing would be great
Technical Details
24mm, f/22, 1/8 second, cropped to 4x5 and shadows lifted slightly in lightroom.
Keenan, the first thing that attracted me to this image was the complementary colors. They stood out for me, particularly in how they were distributed in the main subject. That helped me go around and around and look at each flowing limb of the pandani. The surrounding frosted grass was a very good grounding compositional element to center my eyes on the pandani. You mentioned you cropped the image to 4x5. I am wondering what might have been eliminated at the bottom of the frame. I know nature is not always clean, but I wonder if some of the surrounding ground at the bottom of the image was eliminated in the crop as well as the rest of the pandani limbs. This is indeed a nice capture, and I can see why it attracted you to make the photo.
I have thoughts similar to Egidio. The contrasting colors work well and I also like the texture of the plants and frost. As far as the composition I think the generally central placement of the pandani is an effective choice, although I do also wonder if there is more below the bottom of the frame that would allow you to avoid “cutting off” part of the pandani.
@DeanRoyer@Egídio Thank you both for the feedback! I’m glad to hear that the colors work, and as for the 4x5 crop my intention was to eliminate unnecessary space at the left/right sides of the image. Unfortunately in the scene there was a gap in the bushes and scoparia where the bottom of the image is, so I intentionally excluded it from the frame as I felt that having a dark empty space at the bottom of the frame would have been distracting, although in hindsight I could have experimented with it more. Thanks again!
