Questions to guide your feedback

Glade Creek Grist Mill is one of the iconic fall foliage scenes that is widely photograph and presented on social media. However, I had the opportunity to be in the area, so this is my interpretation. I’m curious as to the viewers thoughts to the overall composition. I find fall foliage scenes difficult to avoid making the colors appear oversaturated.

Image Description

As I stated above, this is an iconic image that is widely photographed and presented on social media. I was in the area, so the I had the opportunity to capture some images of this scene . Unfortunately, this part of the country had experienced draught conditions for most of the summer and fall, so the water flow was very low. Another issue I had was limited access to a clean vantage point. The area is somewhat tricky to find a good vantage point for a unique composition. My composition is certainly not unique.

Looks good to me. It’s iconic for a reason, although when I did an image search I found about 200 other images that looked almost the same, but as you mentioned, not a unique comp. I like the colors and processing here. I think you did a great job.

The colors look good to me. And no problem with the water flow rate. I might like see some more detail in the shadows around the falls.

Hi Steven,
It is an iconic spot and you did it proud IMO. The fall colors look perfect to me; not over saturated at all. The water flow is what it is although it would be great if we photographers could control it. I was there once many years ago and this is the best viewpoint. Very nicely done!

There is a reason this is an iconic spot. This is beautiful, and well done Steven. The colors are great. The water is what it is, and it accentuates the mill rather than overpowers it.

This is really a fine capture. It reminds me of some fond memories leaf peeping in New England. The only thing I would suggest is looking at cropping a little off of the bottom and righthand side to cause the mill not to be quite so centered.

Steven, great shot. The colours and water flow are lovely. My only comment is that the foreground rocks don’t seem to add anything to the image so perhaps crop some.

I’m actually not familiar with this location (maybe I live under a rock ) but I think that this is really, really nice and I like the colourful leaves. They frame the mill very nicely.

Unbelievably pretty, particularly since we do not get Autumn foliage like this. I find the tree colours a bit flat, so I think an S luminance curve lifting the reds and yellows and darkening the mid and darker tones will enhance the photo. This change also moves the rocks to a more supporting role.

Steven,

It is the quintessential autumn images. Fantastic color and detail. The blue tones in the land and structure work nicely with the warm tones in the trees. Its a joy to look at. Icon or not, its a great photo.

Great photo. I think a little bit of a crop to emphasize the mill a bit more would be good and perhaps adding a minimal amount of radiant light enhancement would also draw the eye to the mill more. all in all a great pic.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions!

I join the choir, it’s a beautiful photo and the colors are perfect for me too, interpreted very well. I agree with the advise of cutting the rocks in the forground. Steven, I envy the US photographers that still have so beautiful foliage for their shoots while here in Italy the weather has changed and the foliage doesn’t exist any more. The leaves dry and fall without taking the splendid autumnal colors.

Steven - Iconic or not, the is a materful image. Perspective is perfect and the fall colours excellent. The bit of waterfall adds a lot, even if thin from drought, and the expanse of rocks at the bottom grounds the image well.
Fine shot!
