Gold Fronted Woodpecker

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken at the Laguna Atascosa visitor center bird blind last Tuesday. I had just put out a few oranges, and seconds later the birds started to come by to see what was going on. First it was the Green Jays, then the Grackles, then the Altimira Oriole, then the Bronzed and Brown Headed cowbirds, next the Curve Billed Thrasher, and finally this woody decided to come check it out. We had a nice Common Ground Dove and a Baltimore Oriole come by a bit later.

Specific Feedback

Any and all help is appreciated.

Technical Details

Canon 5DMiii, f8, 1/640 sec, iso 1000, 100-400/1.4TC at 560 mm

nice look at this woodpecker. Wish I could see more of it but I have never seen. One in the PNW.

Sounds like a great birding experience. Nice look at the woodpecker; like the pose.

Nice pose, Ed. I think this is better than I managed at the visitor’s center. It had a lot of birds but wasn’t well set up for photography as you can see from the perch here that’s basically in front of the bird. In the largest image, it looks as if the focus may have been on the shoulder of the bird somehow. I don’t know what AF points you use, but when I was shooting Canon, I’d usually use the wider of the two center points or if I had more room around the subjects, the center point and surrounding points, but rarely anything wider. It’s pretty easy to focus on the face and quickly recompose for the shot, particularly if you’re using back button focus.
