Gone back

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Given all the sound advice on my former attempt at shooting a kingfisher in flight, I went back to the same hide and gave it a new try. This time there was enough light to crank up the speed. (And the software for noise reduction was seriously upgraded since too…)

Specific Feedback

You made me aware of several things last time. I was blind to them then, because shooting kingfishers makes me stupid for joy. So, go at it again.

Technical Details

Canon EOS R6 with RF 200-800mm
ƒ/6,3
1/5000
258 mm
6400 ISO
I underexposed my pictures by 1EV to make sure the whites would not burn (and to gain in shutter speed). Of course, I corrected some of this in LR.

Wow! Splendid. I especially like the electric blue on the body and tail, it conveys a sense of speed and motion that is often not present in images of this kind. Excellent!

You nailed this one, Xavier. The pose and angle of the Kingfisher and the colors are just awesome. The only thing I’d think about doing for this image is removing a little canvas from the right. Given the steepness of the dive, I don’t think it needs that much space to fly into. Gorgeous image.

Beautiful image Xavier and great catch of the action. Your persistence paid off. Love the spread wings and the wonderful colors on the bird. Agree with a crop from the right.

Thank you very much for your comments.
I posted this image on a local website as well, where I received the comment to give more space to the bird. This seemed to me a correct compromise, but you are probably right that a tighter crop from the right improves the composition.
See you soon and best wishes to all viewers and writers.

Nailed it, Xavier. Love the pose and colors and the detail looks great. A beautiful bird, well captured.

Super image Xavier, colors and detail are wonderful. Here in CT, USA our kingfishers are quite different and very skittish. You’re lucky if you can get within 300 meters of one without him flying off. Using a blind is a good idea; most of the time I’m shooting from a kayak. Attaching a (not very good) photo for comparison.

It cant get better than this , a completely new frame of the KF

Well deserved EP, congratulations! The more I look at it, the more I like your image!

Thank you all, for your comments and suggestions. Thank you to the editors as wel. Best wishes to everybody. Xavier

Xavier: I don’t do birds hardly at all but a nice “Oh, my” came out of my mouth with this one. A spectacular creature and pose. Most excellent and congrats on a well deserved EP. >=))>

I agree – this is spectacular (all said above) and congratulations on the EP – very well-deserved!
