Steve, you’re having great luck with these herons. I’ve always found them very elusive and tough to catch anywhere near out in the open.
Not an ideal pose, with him looking a bit away, but quite nice.
That patch of light illuminates his back feathers nicely; a slight brightening of the dark head would match a bit better. Log, legs and BG are great.
Fine work!
Thanks @Sandy_Richards-Brown
I think I like the original. What are your thoughts?

This is one from the pond in our yard. Tiny part of the file.
I would call this one Bad Day To Be A Frog.

Steve, I really like the early morning lighting in this. It has kind of an artistic feel to it. The water colors and shadows are great. I like your original best. I also love the frog catch! It wouldn’t hurt to have a bit more space above and to the right if you have it available.
You’re the artist and have the final decision!
I personally think the slightly-lighter head is an improvement.
It’s a toss up between the two for me. I like the revealed details in the lighter version, but I like the way the darker version adds a bit of depth and more realistic shading. Love the composition too. Nice work!
Hi Steve, nice catch with the profile pose and green water. I like the redo. Details in the shadows and it still looks realistic to me.
