Green Heron juvenile

I have been blessed by being able to observe a family of green herons through the nesting cycle from site selection, nest building, to the maturing of the chicks. The adult pair chose a nest site that I could observe from the boat dock of my neighborhood lake. I was at the lake a few days ago when one of the juveniles landed on the dock I was on and posed for some close up shots. This is an uncropped image.

Amazing detail Allen. You’re so lucky to be able to watch this whole process. I’m just curious, what was the focal length of your Sigma 150-600 for this photo?

Hi Linda, thanks! Focal length was 600mm.

Thanks Allen, just trying to get a feel for how far away (or close up) it takes to get such wonderful details.

This is great, Allen. I love the portrait look that shows all the fine detail like the little tufts of down on the head.
