Grey Squirrel Leftovers

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I found this collection of nut casings and bits at the base of one of the trees in my yard where the local Grey Squirrels like to hang out. Last fall was a very heavy mast year for both the Hickory trees and the Oaks. Most (or even all) of the nut parts seen here are Hickories.

Specific Feedback

I tried to use the large nut casings to move the viewer’s eyes around the frame with the small fragments and the new growth acting as accents. This is full frame and there was no way (without lots of sight cleanup) to avoid things on the edges.

Technical Details

R5, 180mm macro, 1/320 s, f/13, iso 800, tripod.

Very nicely seen and executed, Mark. I know it’s a slippery slope, but those brighter stems in the lower right do bug me a bit. The bits of green sprouts coming through the hickory nuts really help make this image.

Mark I love this idea – indirect storytelling at its best. I have a similar shot of demolished pine cones in the Sierra, courtesy of the Douglas Squirrels. I must add however that the lack of contrast in the shot distracts from the great subject. Any way to shoot this where the walnuts might stand out more?
