It was a cold, foggy morning and the air heavy with moisture. This guy looks less than pleased with the situation. It makes me think of an old man with his coat wrapped tightly around him to keep out the elements.
Any pertinent technical details:
Canon 7D Mark II; Sigma 150-600 at 403 mm; 1/320 at f7.1; ISO 160
Processed in LR and PS, but very little, a bit of sharpening, as any potential change seemed to alter the mood of the weather and the look of the heron.
Thanks for looking. Comments and suggestions are always appreciated.

Allen, your title is so appropriate. You captured the mood perfectly with this one!
I like the mood, Allen. Your light hand on the processing was very appropriate. Did you by chance take some wider angle shots? A background element more thoroughly shrouded in the fog might add to the feel of the conditions, but I do like this as posted.
Thanks, Alan and Dennis for commenting. Dennis, there was no background element that morning due to the dense fog. Normally, there is a bridge in the background.
I like the moodiness in this image. Animals in the fog are always interesting and with today’s modern dehazing technology, it’s not that difficult to filter it out while at the same time filtering out the moodiness.
Well titled, Allen. I got a kick out your description, sounds like the opening words of a mystery novel
I’ve shot these guys in similar conditions, so I’m quite familiar with that posture. And it fits the mood and weather well. Still I think you could work on brightening and adding a little contrast. Also, since there’s no discernable BG I wouldn’t hesitate to add a fair bit of canvas on RHS to get the bird out of dead center.
