Half Dome- the other side

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was shot on my way down from an overnight on Mt. Broderick for a project. I liked the opposition of the boulder to the dome.

Specific Feedback

Any toning/processing suggestions, general feedback?

Everything looks good imho. No suggestions.

Without the boulders, a fine image. Withe the boulders, an awesome image. Maybe a bit more room at the top?

I do have more room at the top. I will add it back in, thank you.

I agree with everything @Jim_Gavin said!!! I think if you have it I’d like a little bit more room all the way around this one but especially at the top.

That’s what makes this image really good. The juxtaposition of the small boulders to the huge granite dome as well as the huge granite slab those boulders are sitting on. The lower right corner might be a tad dark but I don’t see anything else to help you with. I’m heading to Yosemite in 4 weeks and this just gets my juices flowing although we won’t be able to get to the high country for images like this.

Thanks for the kind words. This is off the trail to the cables at the base of Mt Broderick and across from dead lake..

I also like the idea of a bit more room at the top. I’m not sure about the visual weight of the tree covered ridge to the right. Part of me wants some of that cropped off (to the notch on the lower part of Half Dome, perhaps), but with the additional sky, that might not be necessary. Here’s a quick effort, but it might be too static?

Perhaps the tree-covered ridge is useful as a visual antithesis of the rocks? I’ll be interested to see the version with more headroom.

Great shot, great scene! The tonality is great also.
I agree with Marylynne, to crop it a bit on the right and maybe a bit more room on the top.
Anyway, I love the picture

Wonderful image David! I love the inclusion of the rocks in the foreground. It feels a little tight at the top, but otherwise nothing to complain about with the processing or composition. The light and texture on Half Dome is terrific. Well done!

Just for fun, what would it be like if you made the boulders stand out.
