Heart of Darkness

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The thing about foliage in the tropics is that they hide and reveal. It’s the disclosure that is so satisfying. That was my impression at least.

I made another version of this that closer and less mystifying. It’s more about details.

Specific Feedback

Once again: Is it too dark?

I have versions of this where everything is more evident but at this point I find it less interesting.

Technical Details

GFX50R, 45-100mm, f/11, high iso, fast shutter speed

No, it’s not too dark. It’s very appealing. Good work.

Hi Igor,
Definitely not to dark for me. I think you hit just the right balance between those mysterious shadows and that exquisite light bathing the fronds. I think the star of the show is that rust colored one and the way it seems to glow; almost as if saying look at me. My favorite so far from your trip. Beautifully done.

Oh WOW! This is wonderful!! Such a harmonious arrangement of the fronds with gorgeous lighting to bring out the shapes and give a 3D effect. And the colors are so lovely – well seen and presented!

My only thought is to wonder about subtle gradient burns on the left, top and bottom. The LL corner and the right side fade out so nicely.

This is another magnificent image from your trip Igor. I love images that have “something more;” it brings such joy to the eye. Here, the lines are the dominant theme, and they tease and flow as your eye moves around the image; I would not want it any lighter, because the deep shadowing adds to that effect.

Then, there is the beauty and contrast of that rusty-colored leaf, yet it keeps the general them of lines even as it adds a nice cherry to the top of the rest of the image. The tassled ends are a compelling part of that.

Finally, those leaves peeking through in the upper left are like finding an Easter egg. It’s a nice little denoument after the eye has enjoyed the rest of the image.

Hi Igor
I think this is not too dark. Placement of brown frond is perfect focal point. The light green fronds direct me directly to the focus of the image for me. Very nice.

Too dark? Absolutely not! The dark/light balance is quite masterful actually. Darks, not so black they distract and certainly the light/whites are just perfect.

Your processing is masterful. But clearly there is more to this (and your previous…). Capture, processing and presentation are indeed important (making the image the best it can be… ) but IMHO you have long since solidfied yourself as the master of: Seeing/vision, purpose and executing on those mental aspects of photography. Don’t know how else to say it, but have the innate ability to take a thought, vision or goal, all the way thru capture, processing and presenting. It shows.

To this image, the lighting and light balance is beautiful. And beyond the obvious, I love how many of the leaves/fronds in the bg are piercing thru the foreground leaves. There is something very mysterious about this - but perhaps even sinister… like some bad plants trying to escape (just my imagination run loose here.) And the brown one… it’s broken thru… but won’t make it.

So much to love and explore with this one. Hard to pick, but I think your best from this trip. Kudos.

Igor: Simply marvelous color palette and a terrific comp, capture and presentation. A marvelous intimate small scene. >=))>

Decided to change the title to associate this with Conrad’s novel. I see a connection there.

There is a connection indeed. Not too dark as an image, in my opinion, but certainly rather dark emotionally. A splendid image, masterfully crafted!

Like this one a lot. Very harmonious and I agree, the exposure given is just right, secretive and slightly understated. The composition is very good with the greens surrounding the russet leaf.

@Igor_Doncov, this image is stunning. I love the composition and the light (which gives an air of mystery) on the fronds. I might experiment with a slight darkening/burning (or gradient) of the fronds at the bottom. They’re very different from those above and become a little distracting after looking at the image for a while. With that said, I’m being picky.
