I had a play with a long lens

I’m out of my comfort zone a bit here. I’ve owned a 70-300 (albeit it a very cheap one!) for a while but never have any success with it. I just struggle to see compositions. This particular morning at sunrise the clouds descended making my original shot unworkable.

However, opportunity presented itself as the clouds dragged themselves over Skiddaw quite nicely so I thought I’d break out the long lens and give it a go.

Processed to add atmosphere and mood, I’d really love some feedback and advice on composition as well as post processing.

This is a cropped version to remove anything that was a distraction and I think makes for a nice abstract feel.

Much appreciated as always.

Hi Chris, I don’t mind this image too much at all. I’m the opposite to you in terms of ‘seeing’ at that focal length. I have more issues from 24mm to about 50mm hahaha.

I think with this shot is that the cloud on the left blocks off the ridge a bit too much. If it were more like it is on the right you would create more of a sense of mystery.

I may also try to separate the layers a bit more. That will add depth.

Saying all that, I don’t think it’s a bad image

Thanks Eugene. I got some other images over the period of about 15 minutes so can maybe blend a few together where gaps appear in the clouds.

Chris,

A bit late here, but wanted to provide some feedback. I do like the fog action and there is most definitely a dark and somber mood here. On the other side, I think this image is missing something; not sure that the fog or darkness is enough to carry this one. If anything, perhaps a square crop around the more dispersed fog on the right; the left 1/3 or so isn’t adding anything. And the old adage (not sure where I got this, but from a camera club meeting years ago…) “If an element isn’t adding anything to the image, then it’s taking away…”

Thanks Lon. I completely agree I really don’t like that left half. I’ll try the crop.
