Description

This hibiscus lives in a pot on our back patio. It does NOT like the cold so we brought it in the garage to weather our recent cold snap. It rewarded me with some new buds that are blooming slowly.>=))>

Specific Feedback

Is the varied BG an issue? I could have gone all black but I’m in a phase where I prefer non-uniform BGs.

Put that baby on the back of your boat, Bill! I really like the fuzzy petals.

Nope, the divided background works for me - it has interest, but doesn’t compete and feels more natural than all black. I do see some stacking issues though - the petals have blurry streaks in between crisp areas and I’d really like to see the middle bit down in the flower in focus. That would require a lot more images, but if you’re bringing it inside, you could do it. When I pick focus areas for a stack myself, I usually get results like this with missing bits. I can’t remember if your new Sony has auto focus bracketing or not, but if it does and with the new lens, you should get better results.

Funnily enough, I’m contemplating a new macro lens, too, but it’s a Laowa and is manual focus. Of course it’s 1/3 the price of a similar lens with auto focus and so easier to justify since it wouldn’t be my primary macro lens. Decisions, decisions.

Well named, Bill. I like the geometry and the three dimensional feel. I don’t mind the two toned background, though the green seems a bit bright and draws my eye. I wonder about bringing down the brightness on the left and raising it on the right.

I’ve never seen one at this stage of opening and it is a lovely subject! The BG works very well for me, but I could see slightly less saturation on the greens, or a burn toward the left edge.

Friends in Wichita have three large pots of hibiscus and they bring them in the house in the winter!
