Important Update: New Posting Limit in Critique Categories

Hi Everyone,

After careful consideration and valuable discussions with our moderator team, we’re implementing a change to the posting guidelines within the critique categories, effective February 5th. This change is designed to enhance the quality of critiques and ensure that all members have a fair opportunity to receive thoughtful feedback on their work.

New Posting Limit: One Image Per Day

Moving forward, we’re introducing a posting limit of one image per member per day across all critique categories. This means you’ll be able to post one image total each day, regardless of which critique category you choose. The 24-hour period will reset at midnight in your local time zone.

Why This Change?

Our primary goal at NPN is to foster a supportive environment where we can all learn and grow as photographers. The critique process is central to this mission, and we’ve been reflecting on how to make it even better.

In recent discussions, our moderators raised concerns that the current volume of submissions was making it challenging to maintain the high level of feedback quality we strive for. “Critique fatigue” can set in, making it harder for everyone to benefit from the collective wisdom of our community.

By implementing this new limit, we aim to encourage more thoughtful and in-depth critiques. We believe this will create a more rewarding experience for both those posting images and those offering feedback.

What This Means for You:

  • You may post one image total per day across any of the critique categories.
  • We encourage you to use your daily post thoughtfully, selecting an image where you are genuinely seeking feedback to help you grow.
  • This limit only applies to the critique categories. You can continue to participate in discussions, post in non-critique forums, and engage in other areas of the site without restriction.

Grace Period:

We understand that it may take a little time to adjust to this new guideline. For the first week after implementation, we’ll be gently reminding members of the new rule if they accidentally exceed the limit.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement this change. We believe it will ultimately strengthen our community and help us all become better photographers. Your feedback is always welcome, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Best regards,
David

Thanks, David. I recall being limited to every other day on NPN 1 and it did generate a lot more and more thoughtful critique. I hope this will do the same.

I like this idea. Quality over quantity.

@David_Kingham - Well done, David. I don’t know if this is the place to make this suggestion but on a recent post, in his critique, @John_Williams made the comment that he wished the request catagory, “Initial Reaction” was, instead, “Considered Reaction”. I loved his comment and it seems in keeping with the kind of critiques this site would like to encourage. Would you consider making that change?

I support this too. more focus and less noise.

Yes. fewer posts will also encourage considered reviews. I would like to spend a few seconds to minutes with an image before considering my reaction. I need to first become aware whether I am connecting with an image, what am I connecting with in the image, how am I interpreting the image? It is only then that I have something to say and perhaps publish as a critique.

Thank you! I haven’t posted for several months because I’d gotten overwhelmed with the sheer volume of images. And I wasn’t even looking at most of the categories. Hopefully, this will help me get back into the groove.
