In Porcelain's Mist

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I “found” this fallen tree lurking in the heavy mist rising from Yellowstone’s Porcelain Basin, at the edge of one of the hot springs. (“found” because I’ve been here under heavy mist conditions multiple times, yet never “noticed” this scene, while this time it jumped out at me…)

Specific Feedback

It must have been my mood, as the sense of mystery from the mist, the interesting shape of the log, and the subtle bits of color and texture from the surroundings totally grabbed my attention, even as I’ve passed this scene many times over the years.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 428, 1/320 s, f/16, iso 800, tripod.

What a great “find”, Mark. I really like this. The mist of fog hides just enough of the old log that it really does have a sense of mystery to it. Well done.

Mark, this image is a great piece of art for me. The log seems to materialize from uncertainty and to point again to uncertainty. Your composition is full of tension and dynamics. Yet the middle part of the log - in full sharpness - is a point where time seems to be standing still to my eye. It reminds me of the glimpse of a lifespan within the universe.

Outstanding find here, Mark. As always it takes being out there to even “find” a wonderful keeper such as this one. On any other given day without the cloaking by the heavy mist or ground fog it may not present such a fascinating scene such as the results seen here. For me it’s the “mystical” look & feel from this presentation that is the draw… :+1: :+1:

Ooooh! This is really nice Mark. The lighting and the mist is excellent. It makes me think of a mystical curled hand after it has broken through from the underworld. OK, maybe that is getting carried away a bit. But great image.

This is full of mood and mystery and the soft light is exquisite Mark. Maybe it’s just me, but this almost feels prehistoric; like the jaws of a raptor rising out of the mist. Very nicely done.

I’ll fall right in line with the comments above Mark. It’s like a creature out of a fantasy novel. I really like both the twists and flow of the wood, and what the fog does to make it mystical.
