In the meadow

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

From a recent trip to Shenandoah National Park. This is part of Big Meadows, near one of the park’s campgrounds and lodge. The variation of colors in the meadow are always interesting to me, so I try to capture images of it whenever I visit.

Specific Feedback

I was mainly trying to capture a sense of place… Its a large meadow and there aren’t generally too many people in it. So I hope the picture conveys quiet, and a bit of isolation.

Technical Details

Taken with a Sony A7riv and a Tamron 28-75 at 75 mm and f/16. Basic global corrections using Lightroom, and some local adjustments on things like the sky.

Enjoyed looking at your photo Will, I don’t get isolation , and not so much quiet. Get a sense of rolling southern farm land, a place where a Civil War battle could have raged. I like the colors and textures from the foreground to the tree lined horizon. I would fill in the few low white gaps in that tree line in Lightroom. My eyes wandered there a few times while I viewed the image. The hill with the background Pines is a good balance for the subject tree. I think if there was less foreground and it was cropped in from the right edge, they might balance better. I like your overall look though showing such a nice look at this old farm land preserved in the National Park. Was this shot, early May in Virginia?

@Stephen_Stanton , thanks for your comments. I’ll try to fill in some of those bright spots. Lightroom’s new generative features should make that easy.

I’ve tried several different crops, including one with less room on the right. That balances the image better, but you do lose the bright yellow foliage in the foreground. I could try a small crop from the right.

The image was shot in early May in Virginia. As far as I know there were no Civil War battles along Skyline Drive , but probably lots of scouts used the area

I think this does convey a sense of the place Will, but I find my eye here is too restless to sense quiet. I find I jump from the yellow flowers, to the tree, to the skyline, etc.

I do really like that tree. Are you allowed to walk around it? If so, it would be a worthy subject to play with more.

Will, you’ve got another fine look at spring colors set off by the cloudy sky. It is a pleasantly gentle and inviting view as presented. If you want to try for more drama, you could try cropping to move that lone tree near the lower right corner of the frame or even try a pano with the fresh green coming in from the right at the bottom of the frame.
