Indian Paint Brush

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The alkali flats at Wilderness State Park, MI are botanically rich with many species occupying this nutrient poor short grass prairie. I was surprised to find this very colorful Indian paintbrush in bloom this late in the season. This plant is hemiparasitic and taps into nearby grass roots for sustenance. The background is composed of assorted dry grass stems.

Specific Feedback

How do you like the comp? I could have cropped more from the bottom, but liked to show the older blooms on the inflorescence.

Technical Details

Z9 200mm f4 Micro (1/80 sec at f22, ISO 100) DeNoise, CCW rotation with slight crop, bump up in exposure…Jim

It’s amazing how much variation there is in the Paintbrush genome, Jim. I like this one as presented. It tells the story of the bloom sequence very nicely.

You taught me something Jim. I didn’t know they were hemi-parasitic plants. I really like the nice warm red/orange tones of this paintbrush. It seems most of the ones I’ve seen are redder. Nice BG to showcase the color and blossoms. I like the full range of blooms.
